Words on the Wall

In Living like a Log on February 29, 2008 at 9:35 am

I am not shouting copyright infringement, but the title of an article in today’s The Telegraph brought a smile in my face. Recalled many a things, including those days in this blog when I was pronouncedly political.
The urinal for men (I hated defacing other walls) in my department still feature these graffiti after I wielded a color chalk during one of those student days… Gentle irony, I am part of the faculty now.

Confusion and Revolution
Marxism du Papa
Footnotes: Alimuddin is the legendary street which houses the Bengal headquarters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) which is the prime component of the coalition ruling Bengal for…310 years?
Sergei Eisenstein directed the legendary Battleship Potemkin.
Ganashakti, the thing scribed in Bengali in the second graffiti, “is the official mouthpiece of the Communist Party of India West Bengal State Committee”.
“Cinema du Papa” is the term used by Francois Truffaut to deride the films against which the French New Wave rebelled. The derision probably had its quota of affection, I am not sure about mine…

  1. Now we all know why the Film Studies Loo is this famous! Thanks for clearing the “confusion”.

Life’s Elsewhere: C’mon! It can’t be famous for these ‘loony’ reasons! :)

  2. Ah! And I always wondered who the philosopher was! :)

Life’s Elsewhere: Arey tumi ke koyo to! :)

  3. oh well.now thats one place i wouldnt risk visiting!

Life’s Elsewhere: The Eisenstein graffiti can be seen from outside, but the Ganashakti one is very strategically placed.

  4. so next time u see me lurking around the mens loo,u know my intention aint perverse.

    Life’s Elsewhere: :)

  5. Who ever did the graffiti they had great taste in directors… I love Eisenstein’s October
Hmmm the vandal knows about Russian Silent movie directors…

This wasn’t you scribbling on the wall LE, was it? (hehe — cafedog)

Life’s Elsewhere: Er, didn’t I make it apparent in the post that it was me? A student of Film Studies who is now teaching in the same department? Read it again :)
